Putting Together an Unforgettable Celebration Event

Making Your Pumpkin Last Longer

A carved pumpkin is a common type of decoration during the Halloween season. While these pumpkins can add to the festivities, it is an unfortunate fact that carved pumpkins can have surprisingly short lifespans. There are a few ways that you can keep your pumpkin in good condition for as long as possible.

Keep The Pumpkin In A Dry Location

Exposure to moisture is one of the main causes for a pumpkin to rapidly deteriorate. The moist conditions allow bacteria and mold to grow, which decompose the pumpkin. In particular, you will want to place the pumpkin where water will be unable to collect under it. A small stand with drainage holes in it will be ideal for this. Furthermore, the pumpkin should be positioned to where it will avoid rain, sprinklers, or other sources of direct moisture. Dew and frost can be unavoidable, but they will likely evaporate before the pumpkin can start to suffer deterioration from this exposure.

Thoroughly Clean The Pumpkin

Much of the decay and deterioration that your pumpkin will experience will be a result of the bacteria growth. These bacteria will feed on the pumpkin, and this will accelerate its deterioration. Thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing the pumpkin both prior to carving it and after can eliminate many of these bacteria before they contribute to this deterioration. A mixture of bleach and water can be used for this task, but any anti-bacterial cleaning solution will also be effective.

Seal The Edges Of The Pumpkin

The edges that are created by carving the pumpkin can be a prime pathway for bacteria to enter it and cause it to decay. Luckily, it is possible to seal these edges to prevent bacteria from entering through these openings. To safely and effectively seal these edges, you may want to use a clear super glue. However, petroleum jelly will also be an effective option, but it may need to be periodically reapplied.

Consider Alternatives To Carving The Pumpkin

Due to the fact that carving the pumpkin can drastically reduce its lifespan, it may be worthwhile to consider alternatives to traditional pumpkin carving. For example, it is increasingly becoming popular for individuals to opt for painting their pumpkins or using glitter and other adhesives to give it character. In addition to keeping the pumpkin fresh for as long as possible, this will minimize the mess that will be created by decorating the pumpkin.
